What is aortic insufficiency and its symptoms?

Aortic insufficiency is also known as aortic regurgitation. If you have this condition, your aortic heart valve does not function correctly. Its valve leaflets do not open and close as they should. As a result, the leaking valve allows blood to go backwards (regurgitate) into the bottom chamber of the heart. When this happens, it reduces the amount of blood flow and oxygen that is needed to supply your muscles and organs with oxygen-rich blood.

You may have symptoms like:

• Severe shortness of breath with activity
• Chest pain
• Fatigue
• Lightheadedness
• Fluid overload (also known as heart failure), which may result in a hospital stay
• Tachycardia (fast heart rate)

How do I know if I need aortic valve replacement?

If symptoms are severe, you may need a valve replacement. If you have no symptoms, watchful waiting might be the best strategy.
