Valve Clinic
Heart valve disease is a common cardiac issue. It is caused by a tight/narrowed valve (stenosis), usually due to calcium buildup, previous infections such as rheumatic fever, or by a leaky valve (regurgitation or insufficiency).
When a heart valve does not open or close properly, your oxygen-rich blood does not pump in a one-way direction as intended. Blood and fluids can start to back up in your body and cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, slowing down of or inability to do daily routines, fatigue or lower extremity edema. More serious complications could include hospital admission for heart failure or even sudden cardiac death.
