Planning for Your Baby
We want you and your baby to have the best birth experience possible. Here are a few things you can do in advance to plan for your new arrival:
- Fill out and submit your pre-admission form (pdf)
- Discuss your birth preferences with your partner and physician
- Schedule a tour
- Choose a pediatrician or baby doctor
- Meet with a lactation nurse
- Request an estimate of your hospital bill
- In case of emergency, consider filling out an advance care planning (“living will”). Ask your physician for details, or set up a free counseling session at 320-231-4069.
- Pack for your stay — consider bringing insurance cards, social security number, photo ID, basic toiletry items, clothes for you to wear home, clothes for your baby to wear home, car seat and baby blankets
The Birth Experience
We know that you’d like to have a birth experience that’s meaningful to you. To make sure this happens, please us know your birth preferences. Several pain relief options are available to you, including epidurals and intravenous pain medications as well as natural pain relief aids like whirlpool tubs and birthing balls. You also are welcome to bring any other support people you’d like to be involved in this memorable event.
After Your Baby Is Born
Once your baby is born, you can:
- Enjoy skin-to-skin contact with your baby and, if you choose, begin breastfeeding
- Request to meet with a certified lactation counselor
- Give your baby his/her first bath
- Submit your baby’s name for his/her online birth announcement on our website.
- Receive a tote bag filled with gifts for you and baby, as well as our “Caring Book” for new parents
Going Home
Typically, you can expect to stay in the hospital 1-2 days after a vaginal birth and 2-3 days after a Cesarean birth. Before your baby can leave the hospital, you’re required to install a properly secured car seat. If you plan to use a breast pump (something that’s typically covered by insurance), you’ll want to make arrangements through Rice Home Medical by calling 1-800-637-7795.
If you have additional questions after you return home, please contact us at any time by calling 320-231-4420.
