The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program (Ambulatory Clinics) builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Our PGY1 Residency Program (Ambulatory Clinics) focuses on preparing the resident to deliver quality medication therapy management (MTM) services in a clinic setting via comprehensive medication review. Following a 2-week orientation, the resident will shadow ambulatory care pharmacists for four weeks. The resident will gradually transition to leading MTM appointments with close supervision, then leading visits independently. Once full licensure and credentialling is complete, the resident will transition to working an independent clinic schedule with on-site preceptor support. The design of our program allows for a longitudinal learning experience to build relationships with patients and see how pharmacists directly impact care to make rural life healthier. All resident learning experiences are designed to align with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists four required competency areas: (R1) Patient care, (R2) Advancing Practice and Improving Patient Care, (R3) Leadership and Management, and (R4) Teaching, Education and Dissemination of Knowledge.

The core learning experiences will occur in a family medicine primary care clinic setting. There are additional opportunities to work with ambulatory care pharmacists in the following practice locations:

  • Anticoagulation Services
  • Family Medicine
  • Heart & Vascular Center
  • Management
  • Neurosciences Pain Center
  • Internal Medicine
  • Specialty Pharmacy

Staffing:

St. Cloud: One day per week of staffing in a community pharmacy dispensing role from 9 AM to 5:30 PM. Staffing will rotate through CentraCare Pharmacy Northway, CentraCare Pharmacy at St. Cloud Hospital, and CentraCare Pharmacy Health Plaza and will progress to an independent weekday shift with support of technicians. Includes prescription processing, patient counseling, immunizations, specialty pharmacy, 340B, inventory and purchasing, non-sterile non-hazardous compounding, process management and flow. There is the option to work casual hours for additional pay on evenings and weekends.

Paynesville: Hospital staffing one day per week 8 AM – 4:30 PM, progressing to independent staffing with technician support and preceptor availability on-site. Includes sterile and non-sterile compounding. No on-call staffing. Option to pick up casual shifts for weekends or on call hospital staffing.

Practice Management and Leadership Activities:

  • Allocation of one project day every other week
  • Updating and/or developing monograph, class review, treatment guideline/protocol
  • Participate in a medication use evaluation with option of poster presentation at national meeting
  • Creating a business plan
  • Marketing and recruitment of the program
  • Project H.E.A.L
  • Participate in committees including regional P&T committee, local medication errors, falls committee, antimicrobial stewardship, acute care, diabetes clinical subcommittee, etc.

Education Activities:

  • Journal Clubs
  • Grand Rounds presentation
  • Case Presentation
  • Precepting IPPE/APPE students
  • Present a residency clinical pearl with other local Central Minnesota pharmacy residents
  • Present to local high school on role of a pharmacist
  • Other community outreach events as requested

Requirements and How to Apply

Candidates for the St. Cloud Hospital pharmacy residency program must be:

  • Graduates of an ACPE- accredited college of pharmacy, AND
  • Eligible for licensure in Minnesota on July 1st, AND
  • U.S. Citizens or carry a U.S. permanent resident visa (a “green card”)
