Dr. Larry Hook Honored by Minnesota Medical Association for Work on EmPATH Unit
Larry Hook, MD, Physician Specialty Director and Medical Director of EmPATH, was recently honored by the Minnesota Medical Association (MMA) with the President’s Award, which recognizes those who have given much of their free time to help improve the association.
Dr. Hook was nominated for his role as a physician leader and human who tirelessly conducts himself with the utmost integrity, citizenship and dogged dedication to the wellbeing of others.
In 2021, his advocacy and passion led to the opening of CentraCare’s EmPATH psychiatric stabilization unit. According to his nomination letter, the “opening has been a significant benefit to the people of central Minnesota and exists as a testament to Dr. Hook’s vision and determination to see it to completion,” in the midst of a global pandemic.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Hook said he is one small piece of the amazing work being done statewide and shared his appreciation for the opportunity to work with many of professionals across the state and within the CentraCare community.
His colleagues say they have all been able to achieve so much because they have him as a supporter and role model, calling him “the glue and inspiration for a great deal of psychiatric clinical excellence that comes from our institution.”
That support includes expanding programs within the hospital to address the crises of addiction and psychiatric disorders. Because of Dr. Hook’s work, CentraCare has been able to start additional consultation services for women’s mental health and for addressing substance use disorders in a more comprehensive fashion for its patients. He is described as doing his work with grace, wisdom and humor.
MMA’s President's Award is designated for individuals who have made outstanding contributions in service to the goals of the MMA — making Minnesotans the healthiest in the nation; and making Minnesota the best place to practice.
