Running Tips for Wishbone Run

Published in Orthopedics, For the Health of It, Exercise

The Wishbone Run is right around the corner and it’s a good way to stay active on one of the most popular food holidays of the year. Gather up your friends and family for a fun activity before the big meal!

If you don’t consider yourself a seasoned runner, or maybe you’re participating casually with family, check out the tips below to help prevent injury and stay healthy this turkey day.

  • Don’t ‘hit the ground running.’ It’s important to slowly work your way into the run. Warm your body up, stretch and then start your run.
  • Go at your own pace. You must listen to your body and build your strength and stamina gradually. If you need to walk or take a break, do that.
  • Dress in layers. It’s an outdoor run and your body will heat up with activity. Make sure you can adjust your clothing appropriately.
  • If you can train and prepare for the run ahead of time, that will be most helpful. Avoid nighttime training. If you’re running in the early mornings and evenings, make sure to wear reflective gear.
  • Run on a clear, smooth and even surface if possible. If you’re practicing for the run on a track, reverse directions halfway so that you’re putting even pressure on both feet.
  • Remember it’s also important to stretch your body out after the run as well. This is a step many people forget about.
  • Wear the right shoes! One pro tip is to buy your shoes at the end of the day because your foot expands.
  • At the 5k distance, it’s important to stay properly hydrated. That means pre-hydrating before the run. In general, you should aim to drink 10 to 15 ounces of water before the run and every half hour during the event. Follow guidelines based on your weight.

The Wishbone Run is Thanksgiving Day and starts at 8:15 a.m. outside of the St. Cloud Area Family Y. The route will begin along Stockinger Drive. Before the 5K event, there’s the Little Turkey’s 1K at 8 a.m. You can preregister for the 1K and 5K but it’s not required. Participation is $5 per person.
