CentraCare – St. Cloud Hospital Receives National Ratings by U.S. News & World Report

As part of its Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, U.S. News & World Report ranked CentraCare – St. Cloud Hospital as one of the top hospitals in the nation for cardiology & heart surgery and pulmonology & lung surgery.

The annual Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, now in their 33rd year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care. For the 2022-2023 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions.

U.S. News ranked CentraCare – St. Cloud Hospital as Top 50 in the nation for two adult specialties: cardiology & heart surgery (ranked #30 out of 800 qualifying hospitals ) and pulmonology & lung surgery (ranked #44 out of 1,700 qualifying hospitals).

"This ranking comes with great honor, especially after a year of performing a number of ‘first in world’ or ‘first in United States’ procedures," said Phil Martin, Executive Director of CentraCare Heart & Vascular Center.

The rankings for cardiology and heart surgery jumped from #35 in 2021 to #30 this year.

"This demonstrates our commitment to constantly looking for ways to improve the care of this very special patient population," said Martin.

For the fourth year in a row, St. Cloud Hospital ranked third overall in Minnesota for Best Hospitals, behind Mayo Clinic in Rochester and Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Two adult specialties at St. Cloud Hospital were called out for being high performing: urology and geriatrics. The hospital also received strong ratings in the handling of 16 surgical procedures and chronic conditions.

U.S. News estimates that nearly two million hospital inpatients a year face the prospect of surgery or special care that poses either unusual technical challenges or significantly heightened risk of death or harm because of age, physical condition or existing conditions. The rankings are a tool that can help these patients find sources of skilled inpatient care.

Each hospital’s performance is evaluated using a variety of measures such as survival rates, patient experience, level of nursing care and how successfully each hospital helps patients get back home The Best Hospitals methodology factors in data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, American Hospital Association, professional organizations and medical specialists.
