Finding joy in changing seasons

In Minnesota, it seems that one of our favorite pastimes is complaining about the weather. It’s barely autumn and we’re already dreading snowflakes and sub-zero temperatures. Have you ever taken the time to truly appreciate and give gratitude for the seasons?

In mindfulness, there is joy. Take some time when you’re hustling and bustling to get from one place to the next to be mindful and appreciative of your surroundings. Inhale the scent of the pine trees, feel the crispness of the air on your skin, listen to the crunch of the leaves underneath your footsteps and let the colors of fall dance in your eyes. Be mindful in nature.

As the seasons transition, I get reminded of things that bring me comfort and a sense of coziness. Fall brings feelings of warmth and comfort. I get excited to bring out my sweaters and curl up with a good book while covered under a soft, fluffy blanket. I encourage you, as you continue your wellness goals, to find comfort in your surroundings.

This also is the time of the year when we are seeking comfort foods like hotdishes, soups and chilis. When you do choose to have those favorite comfort foods, eat them mindfully. Take pleasure in the aroma of the food, appreciate the warmth you feel as you eat, take the time to savor each bite and remind yourself why this is one of your favorite foods. If the dish is your favorite, give it the appreciation it deserves.
