Don’t take a break from safety
Spring break is a great time to escape the cold Minnesota winter. Whether you are headed for a tropical paradise or a stay at a water park, keep these tips in mind to guarantee a fun, safe vacation.
Sun safety
- Keep babies out of direct sunlight. Dress babies in lightweight clothing that covers the arms and legs, and use brimmed hats.
- Dress children in sun-protective clothing.
- Wear sunglasses with ultraviolet (UV) protection.
- Apply sunscreen a half hour before going out in the sun and every two hours thereafter.
Beach safety
- Never swim alone.
- Stay within arm’s reach of your child.
- Be aware of rip currents.
- Watch weather conditions.
Pool safety
- Always watch your children when they are in or near a pool or spa.
- Teach children basic water safety tips.
- Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid entrapments.
- Have a phone nearby.
Remember to stay hydrated. Being in the sun all day and playing in the water can get your body dehydrated rather quickly.
